At 3.32pm on January 14th 1907 a major earthquake lasting approximately 40 seconds, heavily damaged the city of Kingston and Port Royal, Jamaica.

Major relief efforts were put in place and the effects of the devastation were felt for many years afterwards.

The eleven rare professionally taken pictures below were contributed by Anita (deMercado) Stuart. They were taken at the time by her grandfather Bertie Cecil deMercado of "deMercado & Osorio - photographers" and  dated January 14th 1907.As far as is known, these images are published for the first time.
