FROM The Gleaner for FRIDAY. MARCH 20, I886.

Isaac H deMercado

Yesterday the city was plunged into deep gloom by the announcement that Mr. Isaac  H. deMercado, the respected head in Jamaica of the firm of CHARLES LEVY & COMPANY, had suddenly, and without a moment’s warning, been summoned to his eternal home. For months past the state of Mr. deMercado’s health  had been a source of great uneasiness to his family, it being apparent to all who knew him that assiduous and unremitting attention to business was telling on his once vigorous constitution. It was hoped, however that  rest would restore him to at least comparative health, but those hopes, unfortunately, were doomed never to be realized. Yesterday morning he proceeded to his office as usual and having attended to some business and written a letter, left again with the intention of going home. Arriving at the corner of Church and Port Royal Streets,

God’s finger touched him and he slept

He was seen to fall back in his carriage and the hat fell from his head. And when friends rushed to him to render assistance it was found that the pure, noble, manly spirit of Isaac H deMercado had taken its flight, leaving but the casket which contained the jewel behind it. Tender hands endeavored to restore consciousness, and medical aid responded to an immediate call, but in vain, for apoplexy had stilled the busy brain forever.

At the age of 19, Isaac H deMercado commenced life in the service of ABRAHAM

LAZARUS, and remained in the same office, when subsequently DePass Brothers bought out the business, and were succeeded by SAUL MOSS & Company. That business eventually became merged in the firm of CHARLES LEVY & COMPANY, and about 25 years ago, Mr. deMercado’s sterling ability and integrity were justly recognized by his being admitted a partner in the firm. For many years he had

held the responsible position of resident partner in Jamaica, managing  the entire business, Charles Levy Esq., having taken up his residence in England.

Truly may it be said that the deceased was one of the brightest ornaments of the community in which he lived, for his name was the synonym of honor, integrity, benevolence and sympathy. Among the commercial community he was admired and respected by all, while the poor of every creed and colour found in him a sympathizing friend, ever ready to turn a willing ear to a really deserving appeal for help. In religions matters connected with his co-religionists in this city, he ever took the deepest interest, and has been at the head of his congregation a great many times; but politics and public matters were distasteful to hint, and he never could be  induced to interfere in any way with them.

A devoted son and brother, it is not surprising that he developed into the tender loving husband and father, setting a noble example to his children one of whom Charles deMercado Esq., has recently entered the mercantile community and also to those around him he leaves behind a name of which his children may justly be proud for it will ever be mentioned with love and respect by all Jamaicans.

To his bereaved wife and family we tender our deepest condolence. Their loss, however, is his gain, for after a well spent life,

“Tired, he sleeps, and life’s poor play is o'er."

DEATH OF MR C. E.  DEMERCADO

It is with deep regret that we have to announce the death of Mr. Charles Ernest deMercado of the firm Lascelles deMercado & Co. The sad even occurred on Saturday night and whilst it cannot said to have been unexpected, the news of it caused an awful shock to the numerous friends of the deceased gentleman.

Mr. deMercado had been ailing for some time and towards the middle of last year he was Advised to go abroad for rest and special treatment. He went to Martenbad amongst other places and underwent a course of medical treatment. His health improved somewhat, and he returned to Jamaica towards the end of the year. Although he had not recovered from his serious illness with characteristic courage and indomitable pluck, he at once returned to business.

His friends noticed with deep anxiety the change that had come over the once robust and indefatigable worker. Day by day he was obviously getting weaker; and nearly a fortnight ago he was forced to remain in bed. His condition soon became very grave and those with an intimate knowledge of his case realized that this was the beginning of the end.

Slowly Mr. deMercado became weaker and weaker until about 10 pm on Saturday night when he breathed his last.

HIS EARLY LIFE.

The eldest son of  the late Mr. Isaac Henry deMercado J.P of Kingston (a partner in the old firm of Charles Levy and Company), the deceased was born in 1863.  He was educated in England and afterwards at Heidelberg in Germany.

Highly educated, widely read, perfectly cultured, young deMercado entered the business world of Jamaica splendidly equipped for any struggle. He spoke German fluently and was well versed in French and Spanish. The moment he started his business in Kingston, his natural energy at once exerted itself. Step by step his enterprise advanced until some years later he became manager of the Jamaica branch of A.S. Lascelles & Co. Subsequently he was admitted a partner of this firm. The name being changed later on to Lascelles, deMercado & Co.

He was a partner in the firms of Lascelles deMercado of Kingston and Trinidad:

E. A. DePass & Co., London; A. S. Lascelles &. Co., New York. New Orleans,

Porto Rico and Barcelona.

It is unnecessary at a time like this to say very much about the importance to Jamaica of all the firms which Mr. deMercado represented here.

Their ramifications extend to almost every town and village of the island.

The honour and integrity of the houses that have such a widespread influence have never yet been -doubted. And as it has been in the past, so too we believe it will be in the future.

SOME OTHER ACTIVITIES

The deceased gentleman was connected with various companies and institutions in Jamaica.  It was his enterprise, for one thing that led to the establishment of a match factory in Kingston.  Under his fostering care as one of the proprietors, the factory grew steadily until it attained its present size and importance.

He was a director of the Jamaica Mutual Life Assurance Society, the Kingston Ice-Making-Co. Verley and Robinson Ltd. and he was chairman of the Board of Directors of the Gleaner Company. Owing to his failing health he had to resign all of these positions, save that in connection with the Gleaner Co.

Mr. deMercado also filled many positions of a public character. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Institute of Jamaica and also of the Board of Agriculture and he was one of the vice-presidents of the local Chamber of Commerce.

In the West India campaign against the continental bounty system which so nearly ruined the sugar industry Mr. deMercado took a prominent part. He had unbounded faith in the sugar industry once freed of the continental shackles; and the part which he took in the establishment of the Vere Estates Co and the erection of a central factory at Morelands must be fresh in the memory of every one of our readers.

At the opening of the factory by Sir Sydney Oliver last year Mr. deMercado told of the great difficulties that had been overcome, of the brightening prospects of the unfailing water supply that he was sure they would secure. The wells that have been sunk and the water that is being pumped from the bowels of the earth, the transformation of parching plains into fertile fields, the promise of bountiful crops, all eloquently proclaim the solid foundation there was for the buoyant optimism with which he permeated the banquet room on the occasion of the opening ceremony. Of the Vere Estates Co Ltd., he was managing director.

In the agriculture of the Island Mr. deMercado was ever deeply interested. Apart from the directions made necessary by the multifarious activities of his firms, the deceased never lost an opportunity to impress on the agriculturists of Jamaica the importance of fostering new industries. Himself an authority on the subject he never failed to emphasize the great need for improved methods of cultivation, careful curing and proper packaging of our produce intended for markets abroad. For several years he preached this doctrine to the school-teachers when assembled at the Mico for their annual course of agricultural instruction and showed the enormous sum of money that was lost to the country every year owing to the unsatisfactory and imperfect methods of packing and curing.

IN THE LEGISLATURE

About ten or twelve years ago Mr. deMercado went into the Legislative Council as member for St. Catherine. Along with Mr. D. S. Gideon he drew up an exhaustive scheme of retrenchment. In those days there was not very much sustained united amongst the elected members, and when Mr. deMercado found there was a tendency to shelve the scheme of retrenchment and other important reforms which he believed to be necessary he promptly vacated his seat and refused to offer himself for re-election. This scheme of retrenchment has however borne fruit abundantly, most of the principal suggestions having subsequently been acted upon. He was one of the delegates sent from Jamaica to Washington with the object of arranging the basis of a treaty of reciprocal trade concessions—an effort that proved abortive.

After the earthquake of 1907 Mr.  deMercado threw himself body and soul into the work of relief and restoration. He was a member of the original relief committee constituted under the chairmanship of the Arch bishop and he subsequently became a member of the Assistance Committee. He was a prominent member of the Kingston Restoration Committee and did valuable work on the various sub-committees of this organization. He was one of the leaders of the movement that led to the appointment of the current Governor of Jamaica.

He was a member of the Commission which has been enquiring into the question of taxation in Kingston; the amalgamation of the General Commissioners and the City Council and the extension of the boundaries of Kingston. It is known that he favored recommendations concerning the future municipal government of the City on broad and liberal lines. This will fully appear when the Governor publishes the report.

The deceased gentleman was a thorough sportsman. He had a great love for cricket and occupied a prominent place on the Jamaica Cricket Council. He was also an ardent lover of the turf and used to be a director of the now defunct Race Stand Company.

He married Miss Ione Delgado a daughter of the late Osmond Delgado of Kingston and he is survived by his wife and six children—five boys and a girl. The eldest Harold is now at Geneva completing his education.

Mr. deMercado was a model citizen. He took a keen interest in all that pertained to the welfare of the Country. As an example of practical sympathy and unselfish devotion, it may be recalled how after the earthquake he left his business in a necessarily disorganized state in order to assist in the efforts to relieve the distressed and restore the broken city. He was regarded as the leader of the Jewish community in Kingston and at one time was president of the Amalgamated Congregation of Israelites.

A good husband, a loving father, a hard worker, a faithful friend, a wise counselor, a considerate employer, a clever businessman, Mr. deMercado also combined in his admirable traits a benevolence that might be described as bountiful. By his death Jamaica has lost a sincere friend and a great champion.

The funeral took place after 4 ’clock yesterday afternoon. Leaving his late residence, 90 Hanover Street the cortege moved to the Synagogue of the Amalgamated Congregation of Israelites in East St., proceeding afterwards to the Jewish Burial ground in Orange St., where the remains were interred beside the grave of the father of Mr. deMercado who died in 1886.
