FROM The Gleaner for FRIDAY. MARCH 20, I886.

Isaac H deMercado

Yesterday the city was plunged into deep gloom by the announcement that Mr. Isaac  H. deMercado, the respected head in Jamaica of the firm of CHARLES LEVY & COMPANY, had suddenly, and without a moment’s warning, been summoned to his eternal home. For months past the state of Mr. deMercado’s health  had been a source of great uneasiness to his family, it being apparent to all who knew him that assiduous and unremitting attention to business was telling on his once vigorous constitution. It was hoped, however that  rest would restore him to at least comparative health, but those hopes, unfortunately, were doomed never to be realized. Yesterday morning he proceeded to his office as usual and having attended to some business and written a letter, left again with the intention of going home. Arriving at the corner of Church and Port Royal Streets,

God’s finger touched him and he slept

He was seen to fall back in his carriage and the hat fell from his head. And when friends rushed to him to render assistance it was found that the pure, noble, manly spirit of Isaac H deMercado had taken its flight, leaving but the casket which contained the jewel behind it. Tender hands endeavored to restore consciousness, and medical aid responded to an immediate call, but in vain, for apoplexy had stilled the busy brain forever.

At the age of 19, Isaac H deMercado commenced life in the service of ABRAHAM

LAZARUS, and remained in the same office, when subsequently DePass Brothers bought out the business, and were succeeded by SAUL MOSS & Company. That business eventually became merged in the firm of CHARLES LEVY & COMPANY, and about 25 years ago, Mr. deMercado’s sterling ability and integrity were justly recognized by his being admitted a partner in the firm. For many years he had

held the responsible position of resident partner in Jamaica, managing  the entire business, Charles Levy Esq., having taken up his residence in England.

Truly may it be said that the deceased was one of the brightest ornaments of the community in which he lived, for his name was the synonym of honor, integrity, benevolence and sympathy. Among the commercial community he was admired and respected by all, while the poor of every creed and colour found in him a sympathizing friend, ever ready to turn a willing ear to a really deserving appeal for help. In religions matters connected with his co-religionists in this city, he ever took the deepest interest, and has been at the head of his congregation a great many times; but politics and public matters were distasteful to hint, and he never could be  induced to interfere in any way with them.

A devoted son and brother, it is not surprising that he developed into the tender loving husband and father, setting a noble example to his children one of whom Charles deMercado Esq., has recently entered the mercantile community and also to those around him he leaves behind a name of which his children may justly be proud for it will ever be mentioned with love and respect by all Jamaicans.

To his bereaved wife and family we tender our deepest condolence. Their loss, however, is his gain, for after a well spent life,

“Tired, he sleeps, and life’s poor play is o'er."
